When looking into finding a new home, there are many things to consider. Finding a suitable home, buying the home, selling your previous home, and the list goes on. However, finding a home is only the first step. Moving to a new home can be a stressful experience especially if you have multiple people and pets in your household. There are many tasks that need to be completed and all sorts of items to pack and remember. Luckily, there are several things you can do to minimize the stress that comes with moving to a new home.
Do A “Spring Cleaning”
No matter what time of the year that you are moving, doing a “spring cleaning” is a great way to feel better prepared for your move. You can get rid of items you no longer use, need or want and have a better understanding of what you have in your home that will need to be moved. Cleaning out your home also decreases the amount of things that you need to take to your new house which will be helpful on moving day. As a part of your cleaning, it may be helpful to go through the items you only use sometimes that are already boxed up such as old quilts, holiday decorations and papers and decide what you still want. This will free up more boxes for your other items that you do want to take in your move.
Start Packing Early
The first thing that will help you in your moving process is to start packing things as soon as you know you are going to be moving. However, the suggestion here is that you should start packing the things that are not used very often in your home. Excess food storage, clothes that are off season, tools, art and school supplies, and other miscellaneous items can be boxed up and set to the side. This way, when you pack up your major things, you will not have to worry about whether your sewing kit got into the mix that is being loaded up into the truck. Pack things in boxes that are labeled well on the outside and also with a note inside saying exactly what items are inside so that you can find things easily when you get to your new home.
Do Smaller Tasks in Your Free Time
There are many little things that you may not be thinking about all the time that need to happen before and during your move. These are things that may be good to work on when you are not running around with your daily tasks. One of the first things that may be a good idea to get done is that once you have closed on the new house is to put in your notice if you are renting. This way you can avoid another payment, assuming your lease is month to month.
Another important thing to work on in your free time is to call all of the important agencies that will need a change of address. This includes doctors, phone providers, credit card companies, and any other organization that bills you by mail or you receive important packages from. Other small tasks could include packing up your small decorations like pictures and plants, writing a checklist for your moving day, replacing batteries and lightbulbs so you won’t have to do that on moving day and getting your car checked out so that you will not have any car trouble during your move.
Write A Checklist For Moving Day
On the day of your move, use the checklist that you created in your free time to help you remember what you need to do. There are several small things that people forget as part of moving day. Have your essential bathroom, bedroom, and kitchen things in a backpack or bag in your car with you so that you can find them easily when you get to your new house.
Make sure to leave the house clean in order to receive your full deposit from the landlord if you were renting. Leave the keys for the next homeowners and the garage key after you have locked up and checked all the doors and windows. Do a check of all the rooms and closets to verify that you did not leave anything that is of importance to you. On the night before your move, it may be a good idea to say goodbye to any neighbors that you will miss so that on the day of your move you don’t forget.
